Who we are
Founded by Alan Grommers, a resident of Haarlem and son of two visual artists, FungiTown Mushrooms brings gourmet mushrooms and locally-grown fungi to the Amsterdam-Haarlem area. Inspired by mushrooms back in 2018, Alan began growing gourmet and exotic fungi in his attic, eventually founding the company now known as FungiTown Mushrooms in 2022.
What started as a small indoor setup in a creative hub on Haarlem’s westside soon blossomed into a full-scale fungi farm. In those early days, Alan experimented with different facets of fungi, eventually focussing on cultivating premium-quality mushrooms for local businesses. His goal? To supply the Amsterdam-Haarlem area with fresh, diverse, locally grown fungi. To make the business sustainable, Alan moved his operations outdoors to his current location in The Tuinen van West area of Amsterdam.
Today, FungiTown Mushrooms thrives in a series of converted “Reefer” shipping containers, growing exotic, gourmet mushrooms for a growing list of clients. Alan’s high-quality fungi now feature on the menus of renowned restaurants like Ratatouille Food & Wine and The Fento, and are sold by retailers like By Steef and Molen de Zandhaas. FungiTown also partners with local, organic farms such as Groenhartig and CSA Stadsgroenteboer, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable, locally sourced produce.
FungiTown Mushrooms now employs two staff members and two volunteers, who work together to cultivate high-quality fungi for the Amsterdam-Haarlem community. The farm also offers a popular WhatsApp community for residents, allowing them to order fresh mushrooms directly from the farm.
